One of the advantages of being a well renowned and respected ambassador is that many times, lesser foreign princes will go out of their way to sweeten the visiting ambassador's opinion of the cultural sophistication and obvious friendliness of said prince's realm. This of course is to entice the greater power to give certain concessions and favors to the smaller country. Armed protection or favorable trade concessions are worth a little bowing and scraping.

After two days of touring Ashkelon, not to mention reviewing several lengthy scrolls, Thenmut was ready for some down time. It was hot this summer. All around him was the bustle and clamor of a great city and yet it was small compared with his home city of Memphis.

He'd been especially careful to avoid Israel, where the Jews held sway. Egyptians were still not very popular, even though it was nearly two hundred years after their so called Exodus. It was one thing to be an ambassador. It was quite another to be an idiot. As the long minutes passed, Thenmut watched the palace guards watching him. The unspoken rule was never trust a foreigner. Yet the time stretched on. How long would it take for some cretin to open the massive wooden doors?
