THE TAXI

Back in my younger days while serving in the U. S. Navy and stationed at the Charleston Naval base in South Carolina, I had the opportunity to be in a position that allowed plenty of free time. Being single and bored most of the time I took a position as a driver for the Yellow Cab Company. It was a pretty good deal for me as I got the cab for 12 hours a day and paid them a flat rate plus the gas I used. Other than that any money I made stayed right in my pocket. So I could hustle or I could take it at a leisurely rate. Being an established cab company they had a dispatcher to receive calls and to dispatch available cabs to the customers. We didn't have to watch the streets for someone to wave us down.

I was sitting at the cab stand by the main gate of the Navy base when the radio came to life. "Head out at the Navy Yard Stand." Our call to provide the cab first in line with a fare. "13" was my reply which is the number of the cab that I had been assigned on a regular basis. I was given the address to pick up and told that the fare was going to the Navy clinic. I acknowledged the information as I started to move away from the cab stand.

Arriving at the pick-up address was a young lady and her son that didn't look like he felt all that good. I drove them to the clinic and when the young mother attempted to pay me with rolled up coins, I asked her ...
