All Dr. John Bruce was trying to do was find a cure for Toxoplasma gandii, a parasite found in cats and known to alter their behavior. When it became clear that he couldn't eradicate the microorganism that caused the infection, he began toying with the idea of engineering a version of the protozoan that would outcompete the wild strain. Eventually he stumbled upon a version of the protozoan that had a remarkable affect on the cats in his lab. The most vicious. nasty alley cats, after being infected with his engineered strain, became docile and affectionate.

After two weeks of observation, the cats actually seemed a lot healthier. The older ones were bouncing around like kittens and rolling over to have their bellies rubbed almost like dogs.

Dr. Bruce knew it wasn't particularly ethical, but the crazy cat lady next door had some of the most vicious, nasty cats he'd ever seen and they were constantly getting into his yard and yowling in the middle of the night, leaving dead song birds all over the neighborhood. He decided to do a field test. He took several samples home from the lab, mixed it with tuna and spread it about his yard.

The effect on the cats was almost immediate. The yowling and the dead birds stopped. Dr. Bruce got some of the best nights sleep he had had in years. It wasn't until a month later that he noticed that his protozoan could jump species. ...
