What to do?

Sara listened to her father, her heart aching for him, for both her parents. They had each lost their jobs within the same week six months ago and in this recession they weren't able to find any work. "We may lose the house, unless we can get enough money to pay the back payments before the end of the month." What would she be able to do to help? She knew about the mortgage problems, but she didn't know it had come to this. She had only three weeks to find a solution.

"I'll get a loan, Dad," and they talked about it until her mother's car was in the driveway. "Let's not discuss it while Mom's here," and they went into the kitchen.

Sara began getting dinner ready, but her mind was really on how much money she could reasonably come up with in a few weeks. Certainly not the thousands of dollars they needed; she doubted that she could get that much in a conventional loan, but she'd give that a try.

Sara lived in an apartment with a girlfriend, but she ate at home as often as not. She was in her early 20's, still in college, planning to graduate within the year, working as a cocktail waitress on weekends and one or two nights during the week when the wait staff, most of them working moms with kids to care for, was shorthanded. The money was good, and it fit her schedule, but even with the money she had saved ...
