Genevieve Lanham had been a United States senator for almost forty years. During her time in congress, she'd played an important role in making sure the underprivileged were provided for, that veterans received the rights they'd earned, and that the people she represented in her state knew she was always there for them. Her most important assignment had been as a junior member of the Ways and Means Committee where she and others made sure the country had the money needed to operate without forcing the nation into debt. But three years ago, at the same time she hired me as a senatorial assistant, the chairman of the Committee had been found guilty during an internal investigation of misappropriating funds for his state which caused much needed dollars to be lost to the more important areas such as welfare and education. As a result, the senatorial oversight committee dismissed every member of the Ways and Means Committee, including Genevieve, although neither she nor any of her other associates on the committee were found to be at fault. It was decided that an entirely new committee would not exhibit favoritism thereby ensuring the funds allocated for each individual project included in the funds would go where intended. Reluctantly, Genevieve left the one post in the senate she coveted more than any other.

But there was more political fallout than Genevieve having to leave the Ways and Means Committee. Because she was now sixty-nine years old and had been in the senate since she was thirty-two years old, the people of Genevieve's state decided they preferred new blood and so it was ...
