The two women entered the attic. There were various menacing looking frames and posts. There were ropes going through pulleys in the ceiling. Along one wall was a rack containing canes and whips.

"I'm terrified," Nellie said. "Stay with me."

"I'll stay unless he orders me to go. I have to obey, just like you."

Nellie was shaking with fear as the minutes ticked by while they waited for the Reverend to arrive. She looked over all the equipment with a morbid fascination, trying to work out what it might all be used for. Finally he opened the door.

He lifted up a wooden contraption and brought it to the center of the room. It was like a table except it had a padded top and leather straps attached to each leg.

"Strap her in," he said to Anne.

Anne took off Nellie's dress once again. She wordlessly took Nellie's hand and led her over to the table. Nellie lay down on the top. Anne did a leather strap around each of her ankles. She was about to do up the other straps around her wrists when the Reverend spoke.

"Do you want to have your arms strapped too, Nellie?" ...
