Every year Lord Devon would have a masked ball at his country estate. It was one of the events of the season. Everyone who was anyone in society hoped to receive the gold edged white card that was the invitation. Then they would spend weeks deciding what to wear. Since they were masked they could be daring. Women would wear clothes that hugged their figure. Men would wear shirts that were half-unbuttoned. It was the one time of the year that everyone could ignore the conventions of Victorian England.

"I want to go further," Lord Devon said to the Reverend.

"How do you mean?"

"I'm going to show up with Nellie and Peggy. Naked. They will be wearing a mask like all the other guests, but nothing else. And with collars around their necks like they are my pets attached to chains."
