The two couples sat back, beers for the guys, Kurt and Steve, white wine for their respective wives, Denise and Izzi. Dusk was falling, the soft breeze catching a bit of the coolness drifting in from the ocean, only a few miles away over the nearby hills.

"A toast to our new home away from home," and they clinked drinks, clearly satisfied with their new vacation home; an easy hour from their urban neighborhood but seemingly much more distant, a large spacious house in a sparsely inhabited area near the ocean.

The expenses had been substantial, but shared equally, and all four had put in many hours of sweat equity to get the place more to their liking. Tightening up the old roof had been the first order of business, followed by pointing the brickwork on the exterior of the fireplace, the centerpiece of the living room. Interior walls stripped of hideous ancient wall paper and resurfaced with sheetrock expertly taped and sanded, painted off-white in the living areas, sunshine yellow in the kitchen, warm sensual colors in the three bedrooms: salmon with celery green trim in Denise and Kurt's room, a soft ruby with tangerine trim for Izzi and Steve, the guest room pale rose with cream trim. Ancient shag rugs heavy with years of accumulated dirt were ripped out, revealing hardwood floors, a pleasant surprise, now sanded and restained, some of the old windows caulked, additional windows added, skylights installed over the refitted bathrooms and kitchen.
