Dan's mother-in-law was drunk. Or she was acting like it, anyway. Dan was actually wondering how she could have got that drunk, as Cheryl started stumbling past where Dan was sitting on the couch. To all appearances, Dan's mother-in-law was completely oblivious to almost everything around her, and specifically to the legs of the coffee table, jutting right out to trip her. And then she tripped! That's what it looked like, anyway. Luckily, no one got hurt as Dan's mother-in-law went crashing into Dan's lap.

Dan and Chloe were hosting Cheryl and Bud for dinner. Cheryl and Bud were Chloe's Mom and Dad. This meant that Chloe was running in and out of the kitchen as the meal preparations demanded, and that's where she was when Cheryl took her tumble. Bud (Dan's father-in-law) had put down about three beers before he started on vodka gimlets. He was enjoying a feeling he was used to, the feeling of total, alcoholic disconnection from reality. That was actually a feeling that Bud pursued with a purpose, like the Holy Grail. Non compos mentis! That's where Bud was. That's where Bud was, generally, even in the best of times. Bud hardly ever knew what was actually going on.
