The text came at noon. I was about to fix me a bite to eat. It was from Paige Hunt, the daughter of friends of mine, Lisa and Dave Hunt. Lisa was my late wife's college roommate and Dave was an old college friend and fraternity brother. They lived in the same neighborhood—just a couple of streets over.

"We'd be willing to pay you well for your efforts!" Dave replied.

"And, I will be a good student, too," Paige chimed in. "I want a college scholarship and I promise I'll work really hard!"
