Termites. I usually make my husband, Brian, take care of these kinds of things, but he was out of town on business. So, after I had gotten over freaking out at the army of bugs climbing right out of my the floorboards, I found a pest company on the Internet and paid them extra to bump me to the top of their list for fumigation. They would come in only a couple of days to tent the house. The problem was that was a couple of days too long - there was no way I was going to stay in that house with piles of those things just appearing with no notice. The moment I had the pest control scheduled, I called my best friend, Caitlin.

"It's me," I said, breathless, as soon as Caitlin answered.

"Amanda? What's wrong?"

"My house is overrun with bugs," I blurted. "I need a place to stay for a couple of days. Help!"

"It's not a great time," she said. "Can't you ..."

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw dozens, or maybe hundreds, of termites stream out from beneath a baseboard, piling on top of each other, and I cut Caitlin off with a shriek. "Caitlin, I'm freaking out here," I yelped.
