Chapter 2: Little Oslo

September 2013

It was a cool morning. The dew blanketed the woodland in a fuzzy gray mist. Dixie was curled up on the front porch swing, her hands around a warm mug of coffee as the swing gently rocked. It creaked where its thick rope connected it to eye-bolts in the porch timbers, the sound strangely comforting like the sound of a wooden boat tied to a pier gently rocking like a cradle in the waves.

Somewhere a mourning dove cooed forlornly. The sound befitted the gray but mild September morning. Because of the precipitation, neighbors could be heard a mile away talking as if they were only across the yard. Somewhere a dog barked happily, which was followed by a splash in the water as if someone through a stick or ball into the lake for it to fetch.

The summer vacationers who owned and rented most of the homes and cottages around Little Norway Lake were gone, their numbers dwindling drastically after Labor Day weekend. The full time residents living along the lakeshore were primarily retired men or couples and all were early risers.
