The Chaplin

It had been ten years since I was ordained and I had served a local parish priest, to say that it was not what I had envisioned after leaving the seminary would be an understatement. The declining number of priests meant that you were always on the run and bouncing from parish to parish was really a strain on my morale. That all changed on a beautiful May day when I was summoned to the bishops rectory and given a new assignment, I was being transferred to another state to serve as the Chaplin at the army base there. The thought of being in a warm climate was very appealing and I looked forward to finally settling in and having my own congregation.

When I arrived I met with the priest that was serving the base and given the grand tour and the duties that I would have to perform which was a bit different than those at a regular neighborhood parish, I had not considered the vast differences that a military post posed, the normal older parishioners did not exist in their place were much younger families that lived with the constant a fear and anxiety of being separated for long periods of time. Sunday masses where only a tiny part of my new duties grief counseling was a major part of my time.
