Cassandra is a 38 year IT professional who works from home and she is married to John some 15 years her senior who is a busy neuro-surgeon. They have been pretty happily married for about 10 years and have generally had a trouble free life. Both of them are part time lecturers at the local University, both keep fit with cycling and running and they are best friends as well as spouses and lovers . The only major problem they have had is infertility and despite seeing the top fertility specialists they have been unable to conceive a child for 10 years. Cassandra had thrown herself into her busy life but always felt an underlying emptiness without being able to have her own family. Partly as a result of this their sex lives had taken a bit of a dive and John was frequently unable to perform . Cassandra convinced herself that she had a low sex drive anyway and largely could do without it. This did not help to enhance Cassandra's or John's self-esteem but they accepted it and did the best they could focusing on all the other positives they had in their lives.

Then something happened that was set to change their lives forever. John came home one day and said his sister who lived in another town had phoned to say that her 21 year old son Tom had got into Computer Science Honours at John's University and could he board there for a year and she would pay for his keep.
