My eyes switched open. It was still dark, turning a little to the side, the green numbers on the clock claimed it was just 12.30. Which was strange, because I felt like I'd been asleep for ever.

My mind sorted through all of the things that might have disturbed me - no dreams... no sudden noises... no sudden cramps around the lumps in the hotel bed - and finally settled upon the slice of chocolate cake with a generous scoop of salted caramel ice cream that room service had delivered in lieu of supper. And the last gulps of a coke that I'd started earlier in the evening.

Yeah, that would probably do it.

I looked again at the clock and counted down the hours until I needed to get up. Seven, and half an hour more if I skipped breakfast. Well, that'll teach me not to go to bed so early, and lose myself in an audio book... which was still vaguely audible through the earbuds that lay on the pillow beside me. I wondered how much I'd actually listened to before I fell asleep, and realized I didn't remember anything beyond the narrator announcing "chapter one."

Yeah, go girl.

I flicked on the lamp beside the bed, got up for a pee that I didn't really need, then sat on the edge of the bed. Sleep or smoke? Smoke ...
