I jerked awake and the big clock chimed three. I was in a cold sweat from the same recurring nightmare that I have had ever since that night. I spent the rest of the night dozing on and off until the alarm went off at 6AM. It had been just over a year since the accident that killed my wife and put me in the hospital for two weeks. We were driving home from our usual trip into town to get groceries and dinner out when the truck blew through the stop light and hit us broadside. The driver was drunk, had a revoked license, and had no idea that he was even in an accident. To make things even worse, he came away from the accident with minor injuries. Now every night since leaving the hospital, I have had the same nightmare where I see the moment of impact and then wake up with my heart racing and the feeling that should have been able to avoid the crash even though there wasn't anything that I could have done.

I received a substantial settlement from the company that owned the truck and employed the driver. They had let him drive a company truck, even though they knew he didn't have a license and 2 DUI convictions. Apparently he was a good guy and never hurt anyone so they looked the other way. He is currently serving 10 years for vehicular homicide.
