I had noticed Mary and her husband, Sam, from early in my assignment to the Parish. Mary stands about 5' 6" with blonde hair and a smile that captivates people, deep blue eyes that draw you into the conversation - which is good, because Mary is deaf and through the use of hearing aids and lip reading is able to communicate very well, as long as you are looking at her.

After a few months, I realized the pace of life in the parish was pretty slow. Not a lot of people stopped by the church during the week and since I was the only employee of the church I served all of the roles from Priest to secretary, janitor to whatever else was needed. On Sunday people would stay around and talk for a while and were really friendly, but by Monday I could count on quiet hours and so I spent a lot of time out of the building visiting people, but always kept office hours from 9-Noon trying to encourage people to stop by.

About 6 months into my assignment, I was sitting in my office doing some reading when the phone rang. It was Mary and she seemed to be in a bit of a panic. Apparently a crazy customer came into the big box retailer she worked at and he had pulled a gun threatening to kill people and himself. Thankfully the security guard at the store was able to talk him down from his craziness, but Mary was still shaken and wanted to stop by to talk with me.
