I was mowing the lawn when my mom's friend drove up into the driveway.

I killed the lawnmower, annoyed. I still had half the lawn to finish. My mom was out of town. My girlfriend had just broken up with me. I had tons of homework to finish before Monday.

But I tried to be friendly. "Hi, Ms. Marson!"

The car door swung open. Evie Marson's legs dropped onto the driveway.

She wore a loose black T-shirt, a tight white skirt, and thong sandals. She smiled. "Hi, Scott. Is your mom home?"

"No, sorry." I shrugged. "She's in Pittsburgh. On business for the weekend."

I knew mom was probably visiting some boyfriend. I didn't really mind. She was happier since the divorce. I missed my dad, but he could be an asshole. And lately mom didn't care what I did, as long as I kept my room clean, washed the dishes, and kept the grass short.

"Oh." She stood up and slammed her door. "I thought . . . Well, anyway, could I get a glass of water?"
