I drove us through the winding country roads then up the private road to my house. The colors of the sunset took on a vibrant glow through the trees surrounding my gravel driveway as we pulled up and Jeff took in the views from my house for the first time. My house is situated towards the top of the hill; it has a wraparound deck and large open space off the back of the house with little trails throughout. One of the trails leads to the gated English garden that I had dreamt of having since I was a little girl. Beyond the garden are more foot trails through a grove of all sorts of tress; large oak trees, pines, manzanitas, tons of buckeye and so many more that I don't know the names of. It had been a very stormy winter and spring so even in late August we could still hear the water from the creek babbling in the distance.
Jeff walked around the car as he took in the scenery and grabbed me by the hand. "This place is incredible! I don't think I'd ever leave if I lived in a place like this!" He exclaimed.
"I'll have give you the full tour then! We better start out here while we still have a little light left," I said as I started pulling him towards the front gate.
We walked through the wrought iron front gate, the sound of the metal clanking sending my dogs into a frenzy from inside the house. I let them out as we went past the front door and around the deck to the back of the house. A family of deer were grazing in the field as we walked out onto the extended part of the deck in back. We walked over to the railing and took in the view; the few wispy clouds in sky still reflecting bright shades of pink and purple as the sun began its final descent behind us.
I turned and leaned against the railing as I said, "I don't know if we'll be able to make it down to the creek and back before it gets dark but I can grab some flashlights if you want to check it out."
"Definitely," he replied as he leaned in for a quick kiss.
I went inside inside to grab a couple flashlights, a lantern, a blanket and a few beers then threw them all into a beach bag. Being it was still the time of year that rattlesnakes were highly active in my area, I also put on my boots, grabbed my little 25, loaded it with some snake shot before putting in my boot holster and heading back outside.
"Damn! You ARE a country girl! Should I be nervous?" Jeff asked as I walked out and he noticed the gun sticking out of my boot.
"We gotta watch out for the rattlers out here... I can handle the snake in your pants but this little itty bitty thing'll take care of any others we may come across!" I said with a laugh.
"You are quite the charmer, aren't you?" He said with a sly smile as he grabbed me by the waist and pulled me in close.
I pushed up on my toes and kissed him heatedly before saying, "Just you wait; you ain't seen nothin' yet!" With that, I turned and started leading the way down the stairs with a little bounce in my step. We walked through the field; right past the family of deer that barely looked up as we past. Dusk was setting in as we tromped down the hill and through the trees. The sun had all but disappeared but there was still enough light to navigate through the pathways. The bubbling and gurgling of the creek grew louder as we approached and I was surprised to see the level hadn't gone down much since I was down there the week before.
"Not that I'm complaining, but why go down to the river when you've got this right here?" Jeff asked as he gave me a little nudge.
"You'll see when we get closer, it's not very deep so the best I can do to cool off down here is to sit down in the water... I keep waiting for the level to get low enough so I can dam it up and create a nice little swimming hole," I explained as we got to my favorite spot to lounge.
We set up on the mossy granite slab overlooking the creek. I laid the blanket out and grabbed a couple beers as we plopped ourselves downPlain text or PDF (fanclub only!) version for easy saving or printing
