A Conference Happening

Mike Benson was attending the overnight conference alone, something he seldom did. Usually, his wife Ilene accompanied him when he took overnight trips, but she couldn't take time off from work, and Mike's boss insisted that the conference was important and he had to attend, so he'd come alone.

The day's sessions were finished and, after the banquet, Mike decided to skip the boring after-dinner speech. One of his co-workers, a woman named Susan, was also at the conference unescorted. Mike bumped into her as they were both leaving the banquet hall, they got to talking, and now they were sitting in the hotel bar.

Mike sipped his beer. He was uncomfortable. He'd wondered about the woman next to him ever since she started working with him. Being alone with her had him tense, very tense.

They were seated in a cozy booth in the dimly lit bar and the band was playing soft music, not rock and roll. That was fine with Mike, who wasn't much of a rock and roll fan.
