Janet did not know about the party until the last instant – the men were going to play some poker and watch some movies, which she was fine with because it gave her a chance to go out with her girlfriends. The men were still there when she got home, and greeted her warmly. There were five of them, all big men who played minor league ball. Her husband knew them because he was an assistant to a large sports agent.

They were all nice guys – they had been over many times before, and Janet really liked them. “How was the movie, Babe?” Rick asked as she came home, hugging her.

“It was real good, Rick,” she replied, and he laughed that they had been watching a good movie too. “What was that?” she asked, but Rick just smiled and said maybe she would see later. John hooted with laughter and some of the other guys were smiling widely.

“Hey, Janet, Frank was telling us about your costume for the Halloween party. How about a little preview?” Vic smiled at her, his white teeth flashing in his dark face.

“Yeah, babe, c’mon,” Frank said from the couch. He was looking at her out of bleary eyes. “Go put it on for us!”
