Chapter 3: Love and Lies

The moon danced on the water of Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in shimmering silver ribbons of light. The Christ statue atop Rio de Janeiro's Corcovado Mountain was lit up like a beacon, glowing bright white in the distance. They drove along Avenida Epitácio Pessoa the road that wound around the lagoon, the wind fingering their hair, soft bossa nova music quietly flowing from the car's speakers.

The otherwise breathtaking view was marred by the long row of homely apartment buildings, their nondescript architectural style typical of the 1950s and 1960s. The city's telltale black and white sidewalks done in a squiggly pattern and tropical palm trees added some much needed charm to the otherwise staid neighborhood.

The car's two occupants were quiet, partially due to their distrust of one another - he was a fugitive from the law and she was a con woman on vacation - but also because they were nervous. The two former lovers hadn't seen each other in over a year. They were both taking a risk being together.
