Two Wrongs Make a Right / Chapter 7: The Stalker

October 2006

Jade saddled the two horses as Chris watched. He was a city boy and knew nothing about horses. In fact his stomach was in knots at the thought of mounting the big beast. He preferred his old Harley between his legs where he could touch the ground with his own feet while in the proverbial saddle.

Jade was a natural with the horses. He watched as the horses stood still for her as she opened their mouths with her thumb and fingers to insert the bit and slid the bridle over their ears. She easily heaved the heavy saddles onto the horses' backs and expertly knotted the cinches. She showed him how to mount the horse, effortlessly lifting herself atop the horse and swinging her leg over. Then she dismounted and held the horse for him to mount it. He copied her moves and sat atop the horse, feeling a puff of pride at his accomplishment. Jade adjusted the stirrups for him and told him how to hold his feet in them so they wouldn't slip through. Then she mounted her own horse.

It was a pleasant fall morning in New Mexico; the sun was still low in the sky, the surrounding hills creating purple shadows like humpbacked behemoths. They set out to meet business associates up in the hills.

Chris was scared to death as they climbed the rocky hills. He held his breath as the horse's hooves chipped away at the steep incline causing clumps of rocks to cascade down the path they had come.

They looked like two people out on a leisurely early morning ride. In reality they were meeting smugglers in the hills, exchanging cash for dope. They carried handguns concealed in holsters on their belts as a precaution even though they hoped there wouldn't be any trouble. Loose fitting shirts covered the weapons in case they encountered anyone else during their ride.

When they finally reached the meeting place, they stopped at the top of a steep incline, the smugglers waited at the bottom of the rocky hill. Mexican music was blaring from the Jeep's sound system.

Chris looked down and said, "There is no fucking way I am riding this thing down that hill. No. Fucking. Way."

Jade chuckled and his face turned red with embarrassment.

She said, "Okay, you wait up here and give me the money and I'll go down alone. I'll take care of it."

He handed her the backpack of money and she looped over the horn of her saddle. She started to descend the hill.

Chris watched apprehensively. He didn't understand how her horse could possibly make it down the steep hill without falling. Before they made it to the precipice, Jade told him to just let the horse do all the work on the way down. She said the horse knew better how to navigate the steep incline without any assistance. When he saw the steepness of the hill, he couldn't do it. He felt uncomfortable enough on the horse. There was no way he'd make it down the hill without wanting to throw up at the bottom, if he made it alive to the bottom.

He watched as Jade loosely held the reins and moved with the horse as the beast zigzagged down the steep incline, carefully placing its hooves, sometimes sliding a few feet until it caught its footing. She looked as cool as a cucumber where he'd have been shitting his pants.

She made it to the bottom and came up behind the men they were meeting. A new song blared from Jeep's speakers and they looked surprised to see her as she rode up behind Jaime Juarez and his henchman. They undoubtedly expected her and Chris to approach from the dirt road they used. She dismounted the horse and carried the backpack towards their Jeep.

Chris looked through binoculars to see what they were doing. He admired Jade's bravery facing the notorious dealer and his henchman alone. She turned and looked up at him, pointing up the hill at him. Jaime and his
