Annaba city, Algeria November 2017

The taxi cab stopped in front of the restaurant and the man who stepped out looked more a foreign tourist than a local Algerian. The navy blue blazer worn over faded jeans showed that he had tried to look formal in a hurry. The sunglasses signified that he was a stranger to the sun and when he handed folded bills to the cab driver and told him to keep the change, there was no doubt in anyone's mind that this man was not local. Everything from his accent, his body language and his demeanor gave away that he may have been of Algerian descent but at this moment he was a foreigner.

Hadia Annabi looked at him with a sense of fear for in her twenty-one year old mind, this man, more than twice her age looked authoritative and intimidating. Yet she had to leave the country and a fake marriage with him was the only way out. "Hadia. I will be making decisions on which you will have to trust me and forgive me" her father had said only one week ago. This fake marriage was his idea. At this point, she was so nervous that she did not fully trust him. Feeling alone and vulnerable, her eyes returned to this stranger who was now making his way towards her with a blank expression and strong purposeful strides. Not exceptionally tall, but not short either, he seemed broadly built with short cropped hair and deep set eyes. He was not good looking in the magazine model sense of the term but very manly.
