Mike Dawson was headed home after work. He wasn't particularly looking forward to spending another night alone in his new apartment, but that's the fate he faced. Two months earlier, his wife Jeannette shocked him by telling him she wanted out of their marriage, which had lasted thirty-five years. The announcement took Mike completely by surprise, although now that he'd had time to think back on it, he realized he had to take some responsibility for the marriage ending. "That was us," he mused as he listened to a country singer sing a song about a couple who weren't communicating. "It was as much my fault as it was Jeannette's," he thought.

Mike came down the freeway off-ramp, braked, turned left, and headed down the highway toward the town he'd moved to. His wife was living in the house they'd purchased twenty years earlier. Mike missed his house, and the workshop he'd built himself in the garage, but he couldn't bring himself to make Jeannette leave the home, either, so he moved out. His friends told him he was treating her way too well, but he didn't care. He still had feelings for her, even though he was almost positive they'd never get back together.
