I'd decided to throw a party for New Year's Eve for the first time in many years. We used to have them regularly before the girls were born, but the priorities of our lives and those of our friends changed and parties were just too much effort. It was going to be a big one, with friends, family and neighbours all invited and I couldn't help feel nervous as people began to arrive.

My eldest daughter had just pounced on the latest arrival, Daniel Bell, a guy who had been in her class at school and was now at the local college. They all fancied him, both my daughters included. Yet he seemed oblivious to the attention.
