The holiday weekend had dragged on even longer than usual. Abby wasn't sure why she'd even agreed to spending it with Paul's family, given that they always made it very obvious that they didn't like her. Paul had had words after the last visit and they had at least been civil towards her this time, but she could still feel the glares of disapproval behind her back.

Sunday had been a little better. Paul's older brother had arrived with his two children in tow. The focus shifted to the children and Abby was relieved to be able to blend into the background. She detected a tension between Greg and his parents too, and after a couple of hours she noticed him roll his eyes and disappear out into the garden. She followed.

He was lighting up a cigarette and leaning against the wall of the conservatory. "Making an escape?" Abby smiled. He almost jumped out of his skin, but when he realised it was Abby, he relaxed and smiled back.

"They don't like me smoking in the house," he said, then after a pause added "In fact, I'm not sure they like me in the house full stop. They only allow me in so they can see the children."

"I thought I'd picked up some tension. Welcome to my world."
