It was a week before Christmas. The time of year for both giving and receiving and festive joy. Not so; however, for small-businesswoman Clarisa Cummings. She checked her company's bank balance and for the third time that week. Money was going out faster than it was coming in she noticed, worriedly.

Work had dried up, almost to a trickle, thanks to the ongoing recession, which had blighted most small businesses since the mid-year. Over the last two months, two female members of staff, seeing the warning signs, had moved onto bigger, resolute companies, leaving just Clarisa and three others, all male.

She got in early and worked late, doing her best to trump up business for her failing company, as it was. That put a toll on her love life, which was undeniably barren.
