I still made it a point not to date men I worked with, Brian and Kevin being the exception. To be fair, no one would call those dates, would they?

I'll admit, I did make one exception. My second year as Regional Sales Manager, my stores were improving, except for the one in Charlotte, NC. I had tried everything, except replace the store manager. Scheherazade had a good retirement package for employees who had 20 years of service, and a great package for those with 30 years.

Bob Smith, the Charlotte Manager, was 60 and needed just 3 more years of service to hit that 30-year mark, but his store was just barely profitable. That was unacceptable to me, and the home office. I'd tried everything, nothing worked. I didn't want to fire him.

Bob Smith was just like his name. Plain. Kind of mousy looking. Nothing stood out about him. He spoke in a monotone; he dressed the same; you couldn't pick out anything about him that distinguished him from just some mundane guy on the street. Like I said, everything about him was ordinary. If you met him once, you probably wouldn't remember if he was short or tall, fat or skinny. There was nothing memorable about him. I had one last trick up my sleeve when I made a visit to his store.
