Lizzy carried the clean load of washing into her daughter Lacy's room. Normally she'd just leave them on the bed for Lacy to tidy away, but with her daughter out shopping with friends and her husband not due back until the following day from yet another business trip, she was faced with either a boring Saturday in front of the TV, or a boring Saturday tidying her teenage daughter's stuff away and then sat in front of the TV...

She sighed as she began to put things in drawers. She wasn't quite sure when or why she had become so listless. Ok, so her 49th birthday was about a month away, but she was still relatively young, surely. Every time she looked at how full of life her 19-year-old was, she was reminded of how she'd been the same, and not just at the same age. She and Joe had still gone out quite regularly when Lacy was younger and they had a reliable babysitter. And then Joe had got this new job.

Ok, so the extra money was great, but he was away at least one week every month, sometimes more, and it was just getting her down. Everyone kept saying 50 is the new 40, well for Lizzy it felt like she was approaching 140! She could just no longer be bothered to entertain herself when Joe wasn't around. And even when he was, he was often too tired for them to do more than go for a nice, early dinner somewhere close to home.
