Sorry it's been so long since I wrote a story. Real life gets in the way sometimes. Here's the first chapter of a new story. I have a couple more stories in the pipeline so the wait shouldn't be so long next time. And thanks for those of you who ESmailed me to make sure I'm okay.

I live in a tract house in a nice neighborhood outside a city you'd have heard of. I lived there with my wife and kids. The kids grew up, and then I was widowed when cancer took my wife. The house has three-bedrooms, all upstairs. But I live alone so one is my office for my contract programming business. One is my bedroom. And the third is my room for guests...at least, the sort of guests who need a bed of their own.

I was at my computer looking out. The people next door had moved in recently and I'd not met them yet. But through the neighborhood grapevine I knew they had a couple of kids who were away at college. I didn't even know if they were boys or girls...or men or women, it's not clear what the best words are for students who are in between, not ...
