I smiled across the table at my beautiful wife and was somewhat relieved to see that her return one that seemed genuine. Wendy had seemed uncharacteristically nervous or anxious over the last week or two, refusing to confide in me and I'd hurriedly planned a dinner for just the two of us in an attempt to cheer her up.

"That sounds great Steve" she'd smiled at me during breakfast two mornings earlier as I'd explained my plans, "But I'm working late Wednesday afternoon, can I meet you there?"

It was the first I'd heard of Wednesday's overtime but I'd simply smiled at her and made a mental note to alter the babysitting plans to suit.

I'd beat her to the restaurant by ten minutes and the attention she garnered from the male portion of crowd wasn't lost on me, despite her still wearing her office attire.

We ordered drinks and a shared entrée, reaching across the table to clasp each other's hands while we made small talk, both acutely aware of the family sat close enough to hear most of our conversation.

The arrival of our main meal coincided with the departure of the family of four and I'm not sure which contributed more to Wendy's rapidly brightening mood.
