It all started my senior year in high school. I didn't have a date for the Senior Prom, and my closest friend, Samantha, suggested that I take Shana, the one black girl in the entire school and Samantha's best friends.

When we were in 3rd grade, Shana's family moved into the neighborhood. Their yard backed up to Samantha's family's. Within a year, Shana and Samantha's fathers had cut out a section of the fence between the two yards and replaced it with a gate, so the girls could play together. At school, you'd rarely see one without the other. She was a sweetheart, part of our high school clique.

"Rick, you never know, you might get lucky," Sam said.

"You think?"

"I'll bet you a quarter." That's a game Samantha and I had been playing since 1st grade. We'd bet a quarter on something silly. I'll bet we traded that same quarter back and forth thirty or forty times over the years.

Shana and I had a good time, and afterwards went to Samantha's for an after-prom party. She came up to us. "You guys can use my bedroom, if you want."
