At that time of night, I reckoned I could do it in 20 minutes through the winding streets of the old city. I wanted a shower though so I arrived fresh, so I said half an hour. Julia seemed fine with that.

Just over ten minutes later I was leaving the flat and heading for my car, parked in the next street. The journey was uneventful but I drove round her area for a few minutes looking for somewhere to park and getting more frustrated. By the time I found somewhere and walked back to her block, it was nearer forty-five minutes and I hoped she hadn't given up on me.

Apprehensively I pressed her door buzzer, and waited in an agony of worry that she may have gone to bed. It was just after midnight. She buzzed me up after only about twenty seconds that had seemed like twenty minutes. Up at her flat entrance, I knocked the door. There was the sound of the peephole being opened then Julia let me in. She was dressed once more in the black robe. Up close it wasn't actually sheer at all. My earlier thoughts on that were clearly a figment of my imagination.

"Come in, I was worried you had got cold feet and decided not to come."

"No." I replied, "just had trouble parking."
