Kathryn smoothed her new dress, and looked over the dining table one more time. Her daughter Alice should be here anytime to celebrate Kathryn's 63rd birthday. It was going to be a far more cheerful event than last year, what with Paul, her husband of 40 years, dying just six weeks before her birthday a year ago. She had promised him in those last days that she would get on with her life, and today was going to be the day she kept that promise. Alice was going to tell her about online dating over dinner, and, although cautious, Kathryn planned on giving it a try. She had lost eighteen pounds, bought a new dress, changed her hair style, make-up, and attitude. Today was the first day of the rest of her life, and...just then the doorbell rang.

Alice walked in, carrying an exceptionally large, gift wrapped box. She set it on the coffee table, then the two had drinks and dinner. Alice did check her watch a couple of times as the evening progressed, then announced that it was time for Kathryn to open her gift. Kathryn did so, and found a high-quality remote controlled ceiling fan with a four-bulb light.
