I was eight years old when my mum re-married and I moved in with my step-father and step-sister. I really liked my step-father he was always great with me and I could see my mum loved him very much. Life was good. Much better than it had been when it was just me and my mum. We now lived in a nice house on the edge of town with a big garden, instead of a little flat above the convenience store on a busy road. My mum was so much happier and much more fun too.

The only down-side as far as I was concerned was my step-sister, Emma. She was a girl, obviously. That was not a good start. I wanted a brother. Girls were not cool in those days as far as I was concerned. Next, she was older. She was twelve. That was not cool either. She wasn't interested in all the things that I was.

Looking back I see now that was a totally unfair assessment of her on my part. She was (still is) a really nice person. I just couldn't see that through at eight-year old's eyes. We would have got on a lot better far sooner if I had accepted her more.

Anyway, we both got older and as we did, we began to get on better and better. Probably helped by her kindness and patience. By the time I was twelve I adored her and she adored me. We were firm friends. She looked out for me and I looked out for her. But at that age she got me out of more scrapes - or stopped me getting into them than I did for her.
