I woke up today and found a birthday note on the fridge. It stated Happy birthday from your room mates. I opened the fridge and found a box of candies that they had left. Andrew and Jason had been my roommates for the last two months, but they had been my friends for a while. It was a good thing on their part to remember my birthday specially when I do not recall telling them. Andrew was a working at a big stationary and office supplies store as a computer sales man and Jason was still at school. They had both left early morning and the house was empty.

There were messages on the answering machine. Lots of them. My parents had called from Vancouver to wish me happy birthday, my sister had called from New York, then a couple of friends. The last message was Jason's. "Don't leave the house after 7pm, we are bringing a surprise home." He had said. I knew they were planning a party and the party supplies had been here since yesterday but why they expected me to stay home I did not know. I cleaned the place up and did my laundry.

The guests began to come at 7:30. Soon the place was full and the party was on its way. Everyone had a great time and by the time every one left it was past midnight. What bothered me was that Jason had not come. He just wasn't home. I asked Andrew and he said he had no idea where Jason was. I told him about the message on the phone but he shrugged. ...
