It was the second morning of St Joseph's hospital's newest administrator's tenure, one she had already very much stamped her mark on with the hospital's four doctors, Fox, Rogers, Fillmore and Hanson.

The previous afternoon, Sandra Cummings had explained her hands-on patient care to them and in a most unorthodox manner. Suffice it to say, each of the four doctor's were more than happy to take on board her directive as will be seen in later parts. For now, though, it was the turn of the nurses to be appraised of her exquisite health care expectations.

As with the four Doctors, the new administrator scheduled several meetings for Tuesday, seeing the hospital's many nurses, 20 in all, in groups of four. To explain what she wanted from them, Miss Cummings also had a male orderly present to act as a patient complete with a gurney.

The first part of each meeting was very much the same as that of the previous afternoon, Sandra setting out her plans and ideals for the hospital, impressing upon them the need for change and, moreover, the type of health care she practiced throughout her nursing career.

"It's my belief, ladies, and I speak from past experience, that what's required is a hands-on approach. Make the patient feel comfortable at all times and tend to their every need," she said, hair once again tied ...
