Akiko was pleased with herself. Using some internet sleuthing skills, she found where Mariko Omura lived in San Diego and got Mariko's home telephone number from an internet site she chanced upon. Mariko's married surname was Filmore.

Akiko called Mariko introduced herself as an exchange student living with Kurt and Martha Walker in Nebraska. Mariko's heart skipped a beat when she heard the name of Kurt. She patiently listened to Akiko's story. When Akiko got to the part about Kurt missing Mariko very much and that he longed so much to hold Mariko in his arms, Mariko's knees weakened. Akiko ended the call by asking if Mariko would be warm to the idea of she and Kurt meeting one day. The question took Mariko by surprise and she asked Akiko what she meant. Akiko explained that Kurt had a trip scheduled for Las Vegas in two weeks to attend a technical convention for corn and wheat growers. She added that Kurt would be travelling alone and would be in Las Vegas for one whole week for the conference and would stay another five for sightseeing. Akiko gave Mariko her cellphone number and told her to call if she was decided to meet up with Kurt. Mariko said she would think about it.
