Mike Dawson had finished his interview with the deputy who'd been involved in the pursuit and had also reviewed the preliminary reports from the state patrol troopers who had investigated the crash that ended the pursuit. "Seems to me you followed our procedures all the way through this," he told Marlene Dickson, the blonde veteran deputy sitting next to his desk. "Good job, really."

"Thanks, Cap," the deputy said. She looked relieved. "The people in the car those asshole hit, they going to be OK?"

Mike nodded. "They'll be fine. In fact, they've been treated and released from the hospital." He grinned at her. "Why don't you take the rest of your shift off and go home?" he suggested. "Let your husband and kids know you're OK."

"You sure that's OK?" she asked. "I mean, I don't want to leave the shift short handed."

"If they run into trouble, they can call someone in," Mike said. "I'm ordering you to take the rest of the shift off."
