Over the centuries it happened before in the long pass the Silk Road took through northern Persia. The caravan was ambushed by thieves bent on stealing the goods destined for the East.

The caravans often fought back or negotiated a price to pass through the deep valley; the only known route to the East.

Two months after the caravan left Thessaloniki, and less than a month from reaching al-Wadistan the bandits struck, blocking the route. Spears and arrows were exchanged; the fighting ended in a standstill, with blood shed on both sides. However, the caravan couldn't move forward without paying the "toll."

Zariun, and the traders in the caravan were unwilling to give up their goods to assure their safe passage, but offered the bandits' leader, Reza, the two girls in exchange, but only if they were returned alive in two weeks.

"They tell me I'm almost seventy years old; what would I do with two girls?" Reza said.

"That's my best offer," said Zariun. "Many of your men will die if you continue the fight. We're willing to die to protect our trade goods, are you? Other caravans, not as well armed come through your valley. Steal from them." ...
