Even before my divorce, I found myself having to do the odd DIY job around the house. I borrowed books from our local library, which helped, and I subsequently learnt quite a lot.

It was only after my divorce from Eric that I considered the prospect of offering my DIY services to other women like myself and I was soon, thanks to adverts in shop windows, and then word-of-mouth, getting calls for work; anything from fitting a plug to plumbing a washing machine.

It just so happened that my best friend, Rachel, a divorcee like myself, had need of my services. In actual fact, it was her son, Matt, to be precise. He had recently moved out, and his apartment was in need of some renovating. Could I possibly help him? She sweetened it by offering to treat me to a pizza meal. That, I couldn't turn down and so I said okay. Besides, which, I could hardly say no to her.

Having looked at what was needed, I charged the young man, a student, a student rate, 30% off.

The little jobs, painting and decorating, I left Matt to get on with himself, leaving me the more professional tasks, his knowledge of DIY, even for a 19-year-old, pretty limited. It also meant I was able to get things done a lot quicker, while I have a tendency to be self-consciously distracted if the client is looking over my shoulder. ...
