The Runin

My run had become something of a routine – up early every morning, Walkman blaring in my ears, mile after mile of the same dull city streets and never anyone interesting to run with.

Pounding the pavement five miles every day has kept my 6-foot-2 frame in very good shape. The six percent body fat I did have was very well distributed and hardly detectable. I was proud of the sculpting my daily run and nightly workout did to my body. Looking at myself in the mirror was not something I had trouble doing. I was desirable and I knew it. Even men hit on me when I was out. Not that I ever wanted to play for the other team, but it was flattering to be attractive to both sexes.

Today was no different than any other day, a little cooler then normal, but the same ol’ routine. I started out on a long straight stretch of sidewalk next to a seldom-traveled road. My usual route took me down the long straight road then along another, heavier traveled road that curved slightly back toward my original starting point. Until finally I hooked up with another road that continued curving, taking me back to my starting point. Not really a circle, but the route did what I needed it to do. ...
