PAYING THE RENT

Like many young couples, my wife Laura and I had our share of financial difficulties in the early years of our marriage. Even though we were both thrifty, we always had a tough time making ends meet. The low point came when our car was repossessed. But not all of our money problems led to such dire consequences. In one case, we ended up having the time of our lives.

We were living in a small bungalow behind a large house that belonged to our landlady, Mrs. Norton. It wasn't much but it was all that we could afford. We managed to make our rent payments on time for the first six months, but then some unforeseen expenses left us short of cash. We asked Mrs. Norton to give us a little more time to pay. She was generous for several weeks, but then her patience ran out.

"I have expenses to pay, too," she said. "If you can't pay the rent by this Friday, you will have to move." I could see that she had made up her mind. "We'll try to get the money, Mrs. Norton," I said. She turned to leave, but then stopped at the door. She paused and seemed to be deep in thought for a few moments, then she turned and said, "There might be another way."
