The pandemic lockdown was a bitch. Katie was on a zero-hours contract, so while her employer kept her on the books, she got paid nothing once the government support dried up. I managed to stay in a job but due to the circumstances, business dropped and I had no chance of meeting my sales targets and earning the bonuses which turned my small wages into a decent income.

Times were tough but we got by. Barely, but we got by. Along the way, we racked up a certain amount of debt, but we were reassured by the fact that the lockdown would end soon and our jobs would return.

Eventually, the pandemic abated and our jobs did return, but as often happens, we found it harder to pay off our debts than we'd planned. Six months later, we'd managed to pay off our credit cards but one debt still hung over our heads like the Sword of Damocles.

"I'm worried," my wife said to me one morning over breakfast. She was looking at her phone. "I've had a message from Carlos. He wants a face-to-face meeting to check over the house and talk about our rent arrears."

Carlos was our landlord and it wasn't unusual for him to call in once a year or so to check that the house was fine. He was a good landlord for the most part. When our plumbing had problems, he'd fixed it for us without charge and the same when the hot water boiler failed in the ...
