Well, damn. Two days in and this trip was already a bust.

I was taking a cross-country trip to clear my head and maybe get some inspiration for my next writing project when, wouldn't you know it, my car died while I was careening through the twists and turns of the Appalachian Mountains.

I managed to ride the brakes to the bottom of the winding road before I lost all velocity and couldn't move another inch. I ended up on the side of the road, barely avoiding rolling into a ditch. Only then, my knuckles white from gripping the steering wheel, did I let myself breathe a sigh of relief.

I scanned the horizon to get my bearings. It was late afternoon and the sun was making its descent. A few miles off in the direction of the sunset lay a tiny town. From what I could see it couldn't have a population of more than a few thousand. The vast open space between the mountains and the town was dotted with cabins widely separated from each other by large swaths of pastureland. Long dirt roads led up to each. These people liked their privacy.

I pulled out my phone to call my insurance company. No service. Of course. The closest cabin was, I guessed, more than a mile down a long dirt road. I hated to intrude on the inhabitants of this sleepy country, but I had little choice. The sun was sinking fast. ...
