Amy told me the party would start around seven. Exhausted after my rather strenuous afternoon with Lucy and her lovely friend I overslept, and didn't arrive at Amy's home it until seven-thirty.

My hostess greeted me at the door wearing a lounge outfit made of satiny gold material. It was loose, but clung to her ample curves wonderfully. "I'm glad you could come," she said. She shook my hand, then she leaned close and whispered, "I'd like to kiss you, but people might get the wrong impression."

She looked terrific, and I wouldn't have minded the kiss at all. She led me into the dining room where a lot of people from the neighborhood were gathered. They were chatting, looking each other over, and drinking the way people do at parties.

Bertha Krimpner, the local busybody, walked right over to me. "Where's your wife?" she asked.
