In was the early 60's and I was a senior in high school. My parents were constantly bugging me to apply to college. It was a given that I would go, but I just couldn't bring myself to complete the essay portion of the college applications.

I wasn't much of an athlete in my Philadelphia suburban school, but I would have made the all-procrastinator team. I'm Langston Higginbotham. Yes, I was named after the famous black poet, Langston Hughes, and yes, I'm black, although back then people referred to us as colored. But not just black, somehow through generations, my ancestors never sexually interacted with whites. When I say I'm black, my skin, like my parents was the color of coal.

I ended up going to Kruger because my mother was an alum; the only black alum.

When she learned that the school was going co-ed, she made a few phone calls, and within weeks I was accepted.

Kruger was small. Each class accepted 100 girls. 25% of the incoming freshmen class were boys. Back then, no one wanted to room with a black kid, so I had my own room. My mother never had a roommate either.
