My senior year there were a few changes at Kruger.

There was now a half dozen black female students; I was still the only black guy and none of those black girls would go out with me.

The other big news was that the college hired Vivian Nichols as a recruiting administrator. Her role was to find more black and other minorities to apply to Kruger.

Dr. Vivian Nichols was famous. She was the first black woman to earn her law degree at one of the most prestigious law schools in the country, in addition to her PhD. at an Ivy League school. It was a feather in Kruger's cap to convince her to come here.

The first week of Fall classes, she invited all the black students to a meeting in her office and asked us what prompted us to apply to Kruger and what could the college do to entice more black students.

We all gave her our ideas, and not only did she listen, but over the next months, we saw some changes.

She was our informal academic advisor. We met in her office and sometimes at her home. Dr. Nichols suggested that I apply to the law school at the university where she earned her PhD.
