Introduction:

Ted's wife, Janet, is beautiful, smart and charming. She's always got an infectious smile on her face.

She's one of those women who seems capable of turning her hands to anything. Not just capable, but good at it.

If Ted could pick just one thing his wife of five years excels at the most, he knows exactly what he'd choose. Her baking. It's where her true talent lies. Forever filling their kitchen with an assortment of intoxicating flavours and scents from around the world.

Their mutual friends are constantly trying to find ways to get a hold of some of Janet's delicious confectionaries, be they cakes, cookies or one of her prize-winning fruit pies.

‘Anyone for pie?'

It was Wednesday evening, 6.15 pm, when a troubled Ted opened the door to their apartment and was immediately welcomed by a delicious wave of warm fruit goodness coming from their kitchen.

"What's that you're making? Whatever it is, it smells good," he said cheerily as he walked down the hallway, hanging his coat on a rack as he went.

Upon entering the kitchen, Ted's wife turned to greet him, a huge smile stretching all the way across her face.

Janet ran up to him and immediately wrapped her arms around her husband's neck, kissing him deeply on the lips.

"Pie," she said, having pulled away. "Blueberry, your favourite," she mentioned with a smile before returning to the oven, saying: "It's almost ready. Let me just see."

As Ted's wife opened the oven, sure enough, the pie was baked to perfection and the kitchen was suddenly filled with the scent of blueberries.

"Emn, I can't wait," Ted announced before making his way to the cutlery draw, leaving Janet to retrieve the freshly baked pie.

"You don't sound your usual cheery self, Ted," his wife uttered, and with some concern, as she served up a slice of the pie and a spoonful of vanilla ice cream on two plates before taking them over to the breakfast table.

"We're having trouble with the investors. They're not sure whether to proceed," he tells her. "They were that close to signing with us and all."

"I take it that's not good, then?" Janet offered, reaching her hand across the table and placing it over Ted's in a gesture of support.

"What happened?"

Ted, himself, had been struggling with that same question the past few days. He had no idea what it was that caused the four investors to suddenly pull back. There are bottom lines to everything, concrete deals that come down to a negotiation over the tiniest percentage imaginable and sometimes people need to feel they are making the right choice with their investment capital.

‘I wish they could feel the warm and welcoming sensations I'm experiencing right now,' a beleaguered Ted mused to himself, only for a light bulb to go off in his head.

"What are your plans for tomorrow evening?" he blurted out, brain already running through options faster than his mouth could keep up.

"Why? What's up? Surely you don't want another pie already?" Janet reasoned.
